Third Year Medical Student Rotation
Winthrop-University Hospital Department of Radiology is a center for the State University of New York
at Stony Brook School of Medicine 3rd year medical student radiology clerkship. This two-week course offers
a formal lecture series covering the basic areas of radiology. In addition, students are assigned to
clinical rotations in which they become part of the diagnostic imaging team. Students are expected to
attend regularly scheduled didactic conferences in the department of radiology as well as participate
in interdisciplinary conferences that include radiology.
Fourth Year Medical Student Elective
A fourth year elective in radiology is offered to medical students attending accredited schools.
This elective ranging from 2-4 weeks enables a senior medical student to experience the many aspects
of radiology. An in depth exposure to the field is important in helping the undecided medical student
select a career pathway. For those students who have already made a career choice, the elective provides
insight into the imaging modalities available and appropriate for evaluating their patients.
The elective is tailored to the individual needs and interests of each student. Students rotate
through each of the department’s subspecialty areas and work closely with attendings and residents.
Students are required to attend the departmental teaching conferences. Students are given an opportunity
to work on research projects under the guidance of an attending radiologist.
The Winthrop-University Hospital has been designated as the premier teaching site in Nassau
County for the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine.
