Background:
This busy section of our department focuses on the various cross sectional imaging techniques
and their uses in the evaluation of all non-neurologic disorders. These techniques include ultrasound
(US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). State-of-the-art equipment
and software is available to address even the most intricate and complicated clinical problems.
Our Ultrasound and CT Divisions are Luminary Sites for the evaluation of the newest diagnostic
upgrades. Our workstations and software allow sophisticated reconstructions in both CT and MR
producing detailed angiograms and cholangiograms.
Consultations and requests come from a diverse group of specialists. Interesting oncologic,
gastrointestinal, genitourinary, pulmonary, cardiothoracic, OB/Gyn, vascular, orthopedic and
rheumatologic cases and pathology are seen in both the adult and pediatric age groups.
Resident Rotations:
Residents spend four to five months in both the ultrasound and body CT/MRI rotations. They
learn the indications and protocols for the various studies performed in these sections. Cross
sectional anatomy and both common and unusual pathologic entities are covered in detail. Residents
assume more responsibility in overseeing the service as they gain experience. Gradually, they will
triage requests, protocol examinations, and interpret and dictate studies. The individual
one-on-one daily instruction is supplemented by regular teaching conferences and on call
experience. Additional separate rotations at our state-of-the-art filmless PACS outpatient
imaging center provide exposure to these examinations and techniques in the ambulatory outpatient
setting. The use of cross sectional imaging in guided biopsies and other procedures is also
covered extensively.
