Emergency Radiology

The emergency department – trauma lecture series provides a wide range of topics to supplement the extensive core experience the residents receive with successive responsibility as consultants to the busy Level I trauma center and emergency department, which treats over 40,000 patients each year. They are consultants to the extensive emergency staff, physicians and specialists.

The lecture topics range from introductory level information including appropriate imaging studies to answer a range of clinical scenarios. Trauma to the axial and appendicular skeleton is emphasized due to the frequency of request in this area including plain film findings, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and recommendations of other imaging modalities.

Trauma is covered throughout the body with emphasis in thoracic, intra-abdominal and pelvic imaging. The Neuroradiology, pediatric radiology, and interventional radiology conferences and rotations broaden the educational experience. During the daytime Emergency Department rotations and on night and weekend call, the resident becomes comfortable diagnosing and evaluating the whole spectrum of emergency department conditions such as appendicitis, ectopic pregnancies, aortic dissections, cerebral hemorrhage, multisystem trauma, etc. The resident assumes progressively greater responsibility during the training program backed by the support and supervision of attending radiologists.
