Winthrop-University Hospital, formerly Nassau Hospital, is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations and the State of New York Department of Health, Office of Health Systems Management.
Winthrop is a 591-bed teaching hospital with a full complement of inpatient and outpatient services, and a deep
commitment to medical education and research.
With approximately 700 nurses and 1400 attending physicians – including 150 full-time faculty members and Ph.D.
medical researchers, the hospital offers a broad range of services – from pediatrics to geriatrics including:
neonatal intensive care, with more than 60 newborns transported here from other hospitals annually for specialized
treatment; cancer care in a Category I Cancer Center; a nationally accredited Sleep Disorders Center; a Level I
Regional Trauma Center; the Long Island Regional Trauma Center; superior thoracic cardiovascular services including
a cardiac surgery program ranked at the top for patient outcome New York State by the Department of Health, and three
cardiac catheterization laboratories; the largest chronic Dialysis Center in the region; a nationally recognized Diabetes
Education Center; a highly-reputed obstetrics & gynecology program; a comprehensive Human Genetics Center, with
services ranging from counseling to diagnosis of inherited diseases performed in an advanced cytogenetics laboratory;
broad-scope pediatric programs, including specialized services in adolescent medicine; growth disorders and
primary/preventive care; a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Which addresses quality-of-life needs of patients
with the different types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; a geriatric care program focuses on providing
a continuum of care for the aged.
The Imaging Services include Diagnostic Radiology, Sonography, Nuclear Medicine, Interventional Radiology and
Radiation Oncology. The department utilizes state-of-the-art technology including new digital radiographic equipment,
two CT scanners and an MRI scanner. The sonography equipment was recently replaced with all new equipment. Winthrop
is a luminary site for Philips Medical Systems Ultrasound and a clinical training site for student medical sonographers.
There is a new digital fluoroscopy suite for pediatric radiology. The Imaging Services Conference Room has recently
been re-equipped with state-of-the-art presentation equipment. Winthrop Radiology Associates, P.C. has a large new
totally digital office with radiography, CT and nuclear medicine. The hospital also just opened a separate Breast
Imaging Suite with new mammography, sonography and stereotactic breast biopsy equipment. Winthrop also just opened
a separate nuclear medicine P.E.T. center and is currently constructing a second radiation therapy facility with
state-of-the-art equipment.
As the premier teaching affiliate in Nassau County of the SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine, Winthrop provides
postgraduate training through 20 approved Residency and Fellowships in a wide range of disciplines, including:
cardiology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology, infectious disease, internal medicine, nephrology, obstetrics
& gynecology, oncology, pathology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatrics, pulmonary medicine, radiology, rheumatology,
pathology, general surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The academic radiology department at Winthrop has attending radiologists who are board certified by the American
Board of Radiology and have advanced subspecialty training and hold university teaching appointments. Our technologists
are licensed and specialty trained.
