Musculoskeletal Radiology

We, at Winthrop Radiology Associates, offer state of the art musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging including digital radiography, arthrography, multidetector CT, high field strength MRI and high resolution dynamic diagnostic and therapeutic musculoskeletal ultrasound. Our dedicated fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists take pride in their profession, performing and interpreting all musculoskeletal exams.

Comprehensive musculoskeletal imaging today involves understanding of CT, MRI, and ultrasound physics to tailor examinations for each individual patient.

MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a powerful diagnostic tool, however most practices do not routinely offer such services. At Winthrop Radiology Associates, however, our musculoskeletal radiologists are adept in MSK ultrasound and perform a multitude of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound guided procedures. Additionally, a certified musculoskeletal ultrasound technician is part of our imaging team, which is a rarity.  Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows patients with contraindications to MRI or severe claustrophobia to undergo testing for soft tissue injury evaluation.  A benefit of ultrasound is that it allows for dynamic real time imaging. Additionally, ultrasound is useful for precise image guided needle placement either within a joint, bursa, tendon or adjacent to a nerve.

We perform numerous ultrasound guided therapeutic steroid (cortisone) injections as listed here. If there is an exam or procedure that you need, but is not on the list below, please feel free to call and ask at 516-663-8779.  We can usually accommodate almost every patient in a timely manner.

MUSCULOSKELETAL MRI

We at Winthrop Radiology meticulously protocol every MRI that is requested to each patients particular need.  Our team thoroughly reviews all images, allowing us to see what our competitors do not. Additionally, we perform MR arthrography, the gold standard for intra-articular evaluation of the shoulder and hip joints.

MUSCULOSKELETAL CT

Computerized tomography of the musculoskeletal system is a complex examination. Our musculoskeletal radiologists tailor each exam to minimize radiation dose while optimizing visualization of the area in question.  Additionally, our radiologists also personally reconstruct each CT scan into 3D volume rendered images on a separate workstation to allow for a complete and thorough analysis.  Our radiologists are also experts in performing and interpreting CT arthrography, which is useful in diagnosing intra-articular pathology in patients who cannot undergo an MRI examination.

DIGITAL ARTHROGRAPHY

Digital arthrography is performed with a digital fluoroscopy x-ray room.  It is not only for diagnostic purposes, but more importantly for precise intra-articular needle placement in the setting of therapeutic steroid and anesthetic injections. Our radiologists are experts not only in diagnostic arthrography, but also in interpreting CT and MR arthrography.

IMAGE GUIDED BIOPSY AND ABLATION

Our musculoskeletal radiologists perform complex CT and ultrasound guided bone and soft tissue biopsies at Winthrop University Hospital.  We thoroughly review all previous imaging studies to assess if a biopsy is indeed warranted and following a thorough discussion with your referring doctor, we will plan the safest and most effective plan for tissue sampling. Additionally, we perform radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of osteoid osteomas.
