Our residency training program has a stellar reputation for developing well-trained Radiologists. Residents are exposed to a unique foundation of education, research, clinical service, and citizenship. The strength of our program is the one-on-one educational interaction that occurs between radiology faculty and the residents. Graduated supervision provides the framework for the development of manual procedural skills and judgment. Radiology residents are prepared for possible future roles as clinicians given the increased exposure to direct patient care that is occurring within the radiology arena in areas such as mammography, pediatric radiology and interventional radiology. Radiology residents are prepared for their future as consultants. Residents are gradually introduced to and taught how to present cases to clinical colleagues, presentations to small groups such as medical students and fellow residents, and then to larger groups at local and national meetings. Residents and faculty have been recognized for their outstanding presentations at both national and international meetings.
The principal objective of our residency program is to provide comprehensive and flexible education in all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology. The four-year program consists of carefully scheduled subspecialty rotations including abdominal (GI/GU), chest, breast, nuclear/molecular, neuroradiology, pediatric, cardiovascular, interventional, ultrasound, body CT/MR, musculoskeletal, and emergency radiology. In addition, Residents invest four weeks of their training experience at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology, correlating Pathology and Radiology.
The Department prides itself on being able to offer an active, academically challenging residency in a supportive environment, one which fosters learning and professional development. Our goal is to provide a nurturing educational experience where talented young physicians can maximize their potential. Our close knit faculty and resident staff helps reduce some of the stress inherent in post graduate medical training. All residents are assigned a faculty advisor towards the start of their first year of residency, for additional mentorship. Strong emphasis is placed on the quality of teaching during clinical rotations and daily resident conferences. Residents review cases and present their findings and conclusions to the staff in a one-on-one teaching exchange. Interventional procedures are performed by residents under attending supervision. We have outstanding faculty, many of whom are nationally recognized, who are highly interested in teaching. Department teaching conferences occur twice daily and include a balanced mix of both didactic and case discussion conferences. Medical physics and radiation safety are taught onsite by our staff physicists. A long-standing monthly Radiology Grand Rounds program explores major radiology topics with invited, distinguished nationally-recognized academic faculty.
A consistent hallmark of our program has been the research and scholarly accomplishments of our residents. Faculty mentors facilitate resident participation and guide the resident, as they serve as primary investigators. By their fourth year, residents will have voluntarily completed several projects, including presentations at national meetings. Several of our residents have been selected to participate in highly competitive resident research symposiums sponsored by the RSNA and ARRS.

• Two-thirds of our current resident contingent were involved in peer-reviewed publications in 2010
• Our current group of residents averages 2.5 peer-reviewed scientific and/or educational abstracts per resident
• The Radiology Department contributed 16 scientific presentation to the 2010 WUH Research Day, and co- authored two of the award-winning papers/posters
• The Radiology Department had 5 scientific presentations at the combined WUH/Stony Brook Radiology research day
• 14 Radiological Society of North America educational exhibits at this year’s annual scientific meeting
With respect to radiology citizenship our residents participate in hospital and graduate medical education committees and in medical student education and mentoring. We have also very recently strengthened our medical student teaching program, and have placed an increased emphasis on the principle and practice of radiology residents as teachers.
Furthermore, residents are encouraged and supported for activities that involve the Long Island Radiological Society, New York Roentgen Society, American College of Radiology and other major society training programs.
The success of any residency program is ultimately judged by the quality of its residents. The board performance, fellowship and job placement, interpersonal skills and professionalism of our graduates are the strongest endorsements for the training you will receive in our residency program.
